Dear friends,
I hope your summer was incredible and that you feel renewed and rejuvenated coming into this next season.
As I'm writing to you all, my son Rafael is playing next to me. He's in love with Sesame Street's Elmo (as many children and adults are!) and he's on the floor surrounded by different Elmos- stuffed, big and little, those that speak and those that are smiling silently. He's learning to count now, and as he puts the different Elmos on his truck, he counts "One, one, one, one.." I try to teach him "One, two, three.." he says "No no noooo!! One, one, one.." It's amazing that Rafael at 22 months of age understands that we're all one, and I find it so sad that he's going to have to learn that separation, and the numbers two and three follow. We all come to this world knowing this truth, and spend the rest of our lives being taught otherwise.
In so many ways Rafael so reminds me of my beloved father… He can never just eat a meal, he is constantly offering bites to everyone around him, just like my father. He is so affected and immediately saddened when another child cries. Many of you may not know that my father also often counted people that way "One, one, one.." whether it was for my benefit only or because he believed it I'll never know, but I find myself so profoundly moved this morning.. My Rafael will never know my father in this world, but he's still learning from him. Thank G-d..
This is the Jewish month of Elul, the month where we prepare for the New Year. We learn that at this time, G-d is "in the field"- here, close to us, in this world, even more than usual. At this time we're not supposed to judge anyone as we prepare to receive G-d's judgment. Judgment and criticism of others (and ourselves) inevitably leads to separation. If we can internalize this way of living and open our hearts to others especially at this month, we will be not only judged favorably but, even more important, we will be blessed with the gift of True, Kind and Loving Eyes for the rest of the year.
May we all have the courage to create a world of Oneness; to hear the distant yearning of our own souls, to remember all the beautiful and innocent truths we embraced as children and have since forgotten. May we learn to be happy, to enjoy every moment and precious gift of our lives..
With love, Neshama
