THIS WEEK'S FEATURED ARTISTS

The Dares
http://www.arielpublicity.net/artists/2456
Genre: Pop, Punk, Rock
When most bands tell you they’ve had to “grow up in public,” they’re talking about getting pushed into the spotlight before they've had a chance to find their voice. But for Whittier, California, trio The Dares, who started playing when twin brothers and co-founders Ben (guitar/lead vocals) and Matt (drums/vocals) Peterson were all of 8 years old, the idea was a bit more literal. These boys-to-men literally grew up in public, forming a band when their peers were still dabbling in youth-league sports and landing a major- label contract with Jive Records before they'd even finished high school. Today, as the trio's powerhouse spin on pop-punk tradition is making clear, The Dares are ready and able to grow even bigger.

Phasara
http://www.arielpublicity.net/artists/2462
Genre: Hip Hop / Rap, Urban
Phashara (emcee & beatmaker) is the balance between aggressive golden age hip- hop and progressive melodious modern hip-hop. His style of vocal delivery is strong while his lyrical content is rather introspective and thought provoking. Phashara's brand of vivid & soulful hip-hop is a throwback to a time when lyrics, chopped samples and drums that boom and bap were standard Emcee issue.

Inca Maya
http://www.arielpublicity.net/artists/2460
Genre: Funk, R&B, Rock, Fusion, Soul
Inca Maya is based out of Jacksonville, Florida and led by guitarist, singer, and songwriter Matt Grondin, who is quickly becoming known for getting invited to sit-in with such heavy hitters as moe., Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Mofro, and Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, and other members of The Allman Brothers Band at the Wanee Family Jam.

Featured Artist Video:
"Oh No " by KaiserCartel
http://www.arielpublicity.net/artists/2413
Genre: Folk, Pop, Alternative, Rock
KaiserCartel's earthy blend of folk and rock will make you laugh, cry, sing along, and want to hold hands with the stranger next to you. Warm up by the fire with KaiserCartel.

New Media Pioneer: Dan Herman of Radio Crystal Blue

Radio Crystal Blue is a weekly Internet radio program heard exclusively on Live365.  It spotlights independent, indie and up-and-coming music acts from many genres and locales in a unique freeform format.  Live shows Sundays 7pm-1am EDT. Archives: http://cblue.lunarpages.com  Podcasted shows also available through the main page.

Q: What is the Radio Crystal Blue Time Capsule, and how can Ariel's artists be a part of it?

A: The Time Capsule is a forthcoming segment that will be a re-introduction of audio I had recorded in 2002-2003.  In that time period I had recorded on minidisc (remember those?) 10 live showcase events in the East Village I also had booked.  I will reveal the audio and names of artists when I launch this in September. A few of the names involved will be very familiar to fans of my show....some are become household names, some are one-hit wonders, and others simply haven't been heard from in many a moon.  All of the audio was heard on Radio Crystal Blue back in 2003, and has not been heard since.  I'm terribly excited about unveiling the audio again.

How this segment came to be is actually a cool story. In April 2008 I completed a field recording (using a MicroTrack by M-Audio) of the CD release for the band Changing Modes  www.changingmodes.com . After the gig, I chatted with Wendy and Yusuru and mentioned the MicroTrack and that I used to use minidisc. Turns out that they also use minidisc for shows and rehearsals! They were very kind to let me borrow their equipment so I could translate all my old audio from  minidisc to  mp3, and therefore to CD quality.
I'm available to record CyberPR artists for both live shows and interviews in and around NYC with the MicroTrack. Contact me via the website or MySpace or Facebook for details.  I record about one event a week with permission from the artist.  Typically I'll make one track available in mp3, streaming and podcast format  to my audience, with the rest reserved for airplay on Radio Crystal Blue as part of my ongoing 'field recording' segments.  Examples of my audio work are at http://cblue.lunarpages.com

Q: You feature new CDs in a separate program each week, how can Ariel's artists get you their CD and what type of music are you looking for?

A: Radio Crystal Blue Novus Ordo (Latin for "new order") was created in February 2008 to handle the overflow of CDs I'd typically debut during my standard weekly show.  This second show airs Sundays 545pm ET and runs for just about an hour preceding Radio Crystal Blue at 7pm.  In this hour, I air one track from 8 different CDs and I give a brief bio of each artist and mention any pertinent news and gig announcements of each.   My tastes in music for purposes of RCB vary to a degree, but here's what gets repeated airplay: traditional folk, modern and anti-folk, rock in most forms, roots, country, fusion jazz, some R&B, some instrumental.  I draw the line at music that typically contains overt political or sexual content.  All else is fair game.

Q:  What is your favorite Genre to play? Does it vary day to day with your different segments?

A: This is a difficult question to answer, as my own tastes vary considerably.  I'll answer it this way: I run my common 'indie' segments with an ear toward music that translates well into other genres, whether by pure musical overlap, or by artist association or some other means.  CyberPR artist Darrin James is a favorite because I can easily segue into his music or out of it with something directly matching such as roots/country, or take a quieter selection from his CD and pair it with someone with a quieter vibe.  Anyone who melds 3-4 genres of material is a hero to me.

The choice of genres will vary and is actually rather subject to which artists are announcing and performing gigs, and when those gigs occur. An open secret about Radio Crystal Blue is that I will group songs by genre, level of loudness, artist connection and the like. I'm a strong believer in the dying art of freeform radio, allowing for a certain amount of flow from song to song. Giving a listen to my show will crystallize (ha!) this point, instead of simply reading through a playlist.

Q: What do you think is the number one most important thing and/or quality for an artist to have in order to be heard and well received on a
internet radio station?

A: Unequivocally the most important quality is communication with the DJ, whether by email, phone, social network page, what-have-you.  For purposes of Radio Crystal Blue, which is totally my own creation on Live365, I check out emails. I join an artist email list in the week prior to my debuting a disc on RCB Novus Ordo. I greatly prefer to have some level of contact, whether from the artist him/herself, or a manager or promoter...somebody who can at least acknowledge that the airplay is granted.  It's nice to see an artist also advertise the airplay in advance as well.   I am on probably a few thousand email lists by now!  On the Friday before a show, I will weed through a few hundred emails in my inbox that post news and info about the artist and then I take a rather formulaic process to determine who gets airplay.  It's not necessary to be in touch with me every week or even every month, but it sure doesn't hurt! The artists that ultimately get my choice of who is featured (Gem/2nd Stage) or chosen for my annual Airplay Vote, or my quarterly/annual Airplay Charts,  are the ones who've maintained a consistent level of contact, whether personally or otherwise. In fact, the Airplay Charts are the best indicator of this, as it also takes into account artists I see in person, record, interview, or book.

Q; You've been doing your programs for eight years, what keeps you motivated to keep promoting indie/underground/ and touring acts?

A: One could not do freeform radio or a niche of internet radio or podcasting without having a true love of the genre or the music scene.  Radio Crystal Blue began in 2000 as a show where I would give my opinion on different subjects in the news and arts, and I'd play from a small collection of CDs.  In 2002, upon the chance meeting of a booking agent in NYC, I quickly immersed myself in the world of indies and underground stars.  The interest has snowballed ever since.  I now receive about 10 CDs in the mail a week, every week. The flow is constant and doesn't stop. Nor do the emails, nor the occasional phone call.  Plus there is a real cause going on, the survival of 'affordable' and 'fair' rates of royalty payments to both the artist and the DJ. Having been involved in internet radio for this long, I feel compelled to contribute more of my thoughts on these newsworthy matters to those who will listen. There are a number of artists who are grateful for having any exposure to new ears and I enjoy hearing such stories.  Also, I am not exactly sure what would happen if Live365 were to vanish from the landscape, so the urgency to get the word out is greater than ever. Regardless, I have an innate desire to communicate all that's come at me in the name of radio, and I spend all this time giving back.  It may seem self-serving to say, but I honestly feel I was born to do this sort of work. I wouldn't trade it for anything else.
